Calculating Energy Savings Using High Efficiency Power Conversion (UPS, AC-DC & DC-DC Power Supply) in Server Applications

Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), Front-end AC-DC power supplies and DC-DC converters are three important conversion processes for powering of servers and other IT loads in a data center. Improving the efficiency of one or more of these conversion processes can significantly improve the overall energy efficiency of a data center.

This Excel-based calculator provides a first-order estimate of the magnitude of the energy savings based on improving the efficiency of any one or more of the elements (UPS, AC-DC and DC-DC power supply) involved in powering a rack of servers. Comments/Suggestions to improve this calculator are welcome. Please send your comments to Bill Tschudi.
